I have known Hughie since I joined the battalion in 2007. At that time he was a Platoon Sgt in a rifle company. It was clear immediately that everyone at all levels of the rank structure respected and admired him. He was definitely someone to look up to early in my career. I worked closely with Hughie in his last two years as RSM during that time I dealt with some challenging and personal situations. Hughie always made it clear if I required support or needed someone to talk to that his door would always be open. This is not normally support offered by a RSM directly. He has always been approachable, understanding and compassionate. I am forever grateful for the support and words of wisdom he has offered me over the years. He has always been someone who has approached situations showing compassion and understanding and I have no doubt this endeavour will be a success with him at the forefront.
